The Conditioned Nervous System (PART 2)

A trauma-sensitive perspective on abuser/abused, victim/narcissist

This is part 2, please first refer to part 1 before reading (click here)

Last week we explored the conditioning of the nervous system from the perspective of driving a car, but also how the nervous system becomes conditioned with a bundle of reactions and reflexes which show up in the way we relate to others.

Let's follow on from that and continue to explore how the victim/abuser cycle perpetuates itself and how both sides of the equation live from and in a trauma response which is perpetuated by the dynamic within the relationship.

The dance becomes one of victim/perpetrator/rescuer. Usually our partner will mirror the opposite response to the one that dominates our patterning, if we are in a fight response and perpetrator role they will move into either a fawn, freeze or collapse (victim and rescuer).

The fawn or freeze causes them to be unable to leave the relationship, to walk on eggshells to...

The Conditioned Nervous System (PART 1)

A trauma-sensitive perspective on abuser/abused, victim/narcissist

To understand trauma it is helpful to know how our nervous system becomes conditioned, the body’s ability to adapt and automatically respond to situations based on past events is a useful tool in many circumstance, for example when we are learning to drive a car it can really feel like its “me” that's learning to drive and will be continuing to drive, but really our conscious mind is only there to assist in conditioning the body to drive for us.

Our cognitive understanding of how a car works, how to use the different functions, eg. gas and breaks and to really get a feel for what it’s like to drive we need our conscious mind.

As we do this something is happening on a deeper level, what we are essentially doing is we are conditioning the body to drive the car so “I” don't have to think about it.

We are imprinting the nervous system with specific movements,...

The Mirroring Concept

One of the concepts that we teach in Root-Cause Therapy is called Mirroring.

When we judge others (which is a natural human thing that we do as a part of our experience), it can become a key to healing by discovering our shadow aspects.

Shadow aspects are our blind spots.

Things that we do, how we behave unconsciously.

Mirroring, or noticing where we judge others, gives us a chance to shed light on these shadow aspects.

And to see where we are actually seeing ourselves in others

Where we are actually judging ourselves. For example, judging someone for how they dress.

If this is something that you notice a lot and find yourself internally making negative comments as you often scan people up and down …

Then most likely it’s something that you may feel insecure about within yourself.

The root-cause of this shadow aspect could be one of many layers, and will be different from person to person.

But for example it may be…

  • being judged harshly as a child or teen about...

What is Embodied Processing?

What is Embodied Processing?

The Embodied Process is the bottom-up approach to working with trauma, low self-esteem, anxiety, addiction, depression and a myriad of other stress-related issues.

This process was created based on years of lived experience, research, training and client sessions.

The creators have incorporated the best methods to help practitioners and clients deepen not only their ability to work with what was once unworkable with normal psychology, but also deepen into themselves and live a much more present and embodied life.

With all the recent neuroscience on trauma, we are only just beginning to understand what our survival physiology is all about. The underground embodied movement sweeping through the western world is now starting to emerge and provide us with cutting edge knowledge to better understand survival physiology, allowing us the chance to make transformation happen from the ground up. Now we can work with the foundations of our human...

What are Adaptations?

As we develop through our childhood we slowly learn which parts of ourselves are acceptable, and which parts are not.

We learn via our parents, our teachers, our culture, social structure, social cues, we learn from television, from the internet and from our peers.

When a part of our self structure arises, and we are shamed, attacked or if love is withdrawn our relationship to this part of our self then reflects the way it was met. We then adapt to our environment, and contort ourselves accordingly in order to maintain an attachment to those whom our survival depends upon.

Nature is quite busy creating beautiful individuals, unique expressions of life itself, whilst at the same time we are busy attempting to make everybody the same. As we develop we slowly learn how to orient ourselves in the world, we develop a feeling of “who we are” and how we fit in.

The primary motivating factor is love, love and attachment from our primary caregivers and those we look up to. The...

What's the Difference Between Embodied Processing and Root-Cause Therapy?

Click 'play' above to watch the video above which explains the main concepts of each modality and how they can work together.

Many people who find our work wonder where to start. Both of our flagship trainings, Root-Cause Therapy and Embodied Processing, which certify you to begin a professional healing practice have quite a few similarities. While both courses aim at healing trauma and fully resolving underlying issues causing us to have pain in our lives, they’re also distinctly different in terms of the way they’re delivered and the energy of the trainers.

Here’s a short breakdown of the two:

Root Cause Therapy

Root Cause Therapy is the original method, created by Melissa Hiemann, used when The Centre for Healing opened its doors 7 years ago in Melbourne.  It was used to successfully treat addiction and mental health issues.

After seeing the results of thousands of clients pass through our doors, we decided to begin training practitioners...

Emotional Attunement

My best teacher, our toddler Tommy, reminded me of the following and I thought I would share it with you all as it's an important part of the human condition.

Because he cannot express verbally with words how he is feeling, he will express it by showing how he is feeling outwardly.

The basic mechanism is that as parents, we start feeling how he is feeling, and thus with this information we can take appropriate action to give him what he needs. This is emotional attunement.

For example, if he’s frustrated because he is hungry, he will start getting very upset and refuse any toy or show or anything that we offer him other than food. His on-going frustration will probably lead to a tantrum and crying ... and guess what ... we will become frustrated. We will start getting angry (and hopefully not have a tantrum as well).

We don’t want to feel that way, and neither does he, so we finally figure out that he is extra hungry today and everyone can relax again. It’s been a...
